Headed to the first Farmer's Market

I am about ready to walk down to Main Street for the first Gunnison Farmer's market. I don't know what fresh vegetables are available this early in June but I am also looking at any local meat products. Also, I wonder if the higher gasoline costs will reduce the number of vendors as well. I'll be taking my camera and then I plan on going fishing this afternoon. I hope to catch dinner and be able to use my new trout cookbook. (Maybe that is wishful thinking, I haven't had fresh trout in three weeks and while a good dinner would be nice, nothing is guaranteed)

Belated Salt Lake Post

One week ago, I drove to Salt Lake City for a quick trip to visit my friends. I met up with Floyd, Leonard, Michael, and Robert for dinner. Here are a couple of photos from dinner that night:

Leonard and Floyd.

Robert bleached out with my camera's flash.

On Saturday, Floyd and I went to coffee and then went to Sam Weller's book store where I purchased a signed copy of a trout recipe book and a used copy of Best Aikido by Moriteru Ueshiba, the current doshu. After Sam Weller, Floyd and I stopped by the SLC farmer's market. We then tried to find an open sushi restaurant for lunch, finally going to Koyoto for some great sushi, which is near Floyd's house. Floyd and I drank some wine and ordered pizza for dinner. Sunday morning I attend the Quaker meeting in Salt Lake and saw some friends I have in Salt Lake. I then drove to Grand Junction and stayed the night with my brothers Jesse and Jarrett. Judd also hung out as his girlfriend and son were in Denver. Monday morning I drove to Gunnison and have working all week, catching up on some tasks. Floyd and I discussed working on the user interface for the eCataloger project. I am using the eCataloger to build an eLibrary for the library. I have to leave for work, I just received an new work-station and there are some settings that need to be set.

Celtics and Weeds

I am watching the finals live as I am watching a past episode of Weeds, the Showtime television show. I am excited about the prospect of the Celtics winning in Boston. I'll blog the final.

Wow, Phil Jackson just called a time out after Ray Allen made a second consecutive three shot.

Boston wins!

Back from wedding and misc.

I am writing this blog from home on my new DSL service. I do recommend using a local ISP because they provided great customer service in troubleshooting my new DSL modem from Quest. The dedicated line is provided by Quest but the service is through Internet Colorado.

Last Thursday night I drove to Grand Junction for my cousin, Mackenzy Rossman's Saturday's wedding. I stayed Thursday night with my brothers Jesse and Jarrett. I went clothes shopping on Friday, looking for a couple of sports jackets for the wedding and just that I needed some more formal apparel. Friday night I stayed with my Dad. I treated him dinner and the new Indiana Jones movie as an early Father's Day present. I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would, Harrison Ford is an iconic figure of cool for people like me who grew up in the 70s and 80s.

On Saturday I spent the morning with Dad and then went and spent the afternoon with Jacob and his daughters, Aura and Emie. I picked up Jesse and then drove to the wedding started at 7:30. My sister Jill, her husband Lance, and daughter Alexis, were already at the outdoor event when I arrived along with my sister Angie and my Mom. This photo is of my Mom.

My niece Alexis started posing for her father so I took a couple as well. Here is one of those photos:

Here is my sister Jill (she is 7 months pregnant), my sister Angie, my mother, and my brother Jesse:

Finally, here is my best picture of the bride, groom, my uncle and aunt, and who I guess are the groom's parents:

Funny story to end this blog post. During the wedding ceremony, the clearly fundamental Christain minister was making too many weak analogies between God and marriage, and then suddenly (I was fading in and out) he compared marriage to circumcision. I had to repress a laugh. WTF.

Slogging through the week...

All this week and the first three days of next week, my schedule at the library shifts to working from 11 am to 8 pm, Sunday-Thursday. This does require some adjustment although sleeping in this morning was nice but now I'm here until 8 pm. Last night when walking home from work (I locked my keys in my office so instead of biking home like I wanted to, I had to walk), there was a fox in an empty lot about a block away from my cabin. I went home and came back with my camera but I wasn't able to get a good photograph. My cousin is getting married in Grand Junction on Saturday, so I'm leaving Gunnison Thursday night. I talked to my Mom this morning and it will be a real family reunion with many relatives I have never met from the Rock (my grandmother's paternal) side of the family.

I haven't heard anything on the Aikido front. After my schedule returns to normal, I plan on doing some quick advertising through a modified flyer. My big plan this week is to get my passport. I finally broke down and by Thursday, I should have a DSL connection directly from my cabin. Fun stuff and should be able to post my photographs from the wedding from home instead of waiting to go to work.

Bacon, Rainbow Trout, and Aikido Update

On Saturday I drove out to Needle-creek Reservoir and spent the afternoon fishing. I caught three rainbow trout and at the end of the day, a large brown trout. The road leading up to Needle-creek opened up on May 30. The first photographs are the two gates that need to opened before driving through. The second photographs are of the road that curves through a narrow canyon leading up to the Reservoior.

Here are some photos from the lake itself, the temperature was in the 60 to low 70s. No wind, and the lake was one of the highest I have seen it.

There were not many people at the lake, a couple floated by on tubes.

Here are the fish I caught:

The final two photos are on the way out of the reservoir going towards Highway 50. I wanted to get a photo of the flooding along Tomichi creek.

When I got home, I gave the brown trout and one rainbow trout to my neighbors as there was no way I would be able to eat all four fish. (Incidentally, this is the first time since 2005 that I have caught my limit.) I tried wrapping the two trout with strips of bacon and then baking them at 350 degrees for twenty minutes. The bacon didn't fully cook but did provide a nice compliment to the fresh pink flesh of the trout. I saved some trout and the bacon for an omelet on Sunday morning. That was delicious and the next time I have extra trout, I am going to cook and save some more trout for trout omelets. Good stuff and not too fatting but definitely tasty bacon to the rescue of boring trout.

I am working on a formal Aikido teaching schedule for the summer. Hopefully it will be Monday and Wednesday nights. I should have more information today. Last night I went over to Escalante Fitness Center at 5:00, as a couple of friends thought they might show up for a quick class.
